El presidente de Cieplan viajará a Atlanta, Estados Unidos, para participar en una reunión de alto nivel sobre temas relacionados con el fortalecimiento de la democracia y los derechos humanos en América.

El encuentro -que se llevará a cabo el 15 y 16 de julio- es organizado por los «Amigos de la Carta Democrática Interamericana» de Carter Center.

Este grupo de ex presidentes, primeros ministros, ministros de gobierno y expertos en derechos humanos, promueve la gobernabilidad democrática en la región y apoya la resolución de conflictos a través de medios pacíficos y constitucionales. 

Los asistentes prestarán especial atención a las negociaciones del proceso de paz en Colombia y la nueva relación entre Cuba y Estados Unidos anunciada por los presidentes Barack Obama y Raúl Castro.

El contexto de la reunión está marcado por tres importantes eventos regionales: el Tercer Encuentro de la CELAC en Costa Rica, la elección del nuevo secretario general de la OEA, y el VII Encuentro de las Américas en Panamá.

El encuentro en Atlanta contempla una recepción en la que participarán miembros del recientemente creado «Círculo de Amigos del Programa Americas» de Carter Center, grupo de líderes del sector privado que valoran la promoción de la paz y la democracia y que se han comprometido a apoyar financieramente a la organización.
